Best Dive Bars

Usually cheap, probably dingy, and certainly a dose of the true flavor of the town.

Pats in the Flats Down the hill from bustling Tremont, near the West 3rd Street Bridge, Pats is all dive. Looking at the exterior you could think it’s abandoned (hell, the upstairs windows are boarded up). Once inside though, you know you are in the right place. Beers, bands (the White Stripes played their first show outside Detroit here), and the kind of staff and clientele that are the definition of dive.

Parnell’s Pub On Lee Road and a nice place to grab a beer before or after a film at Cedar Lee. But you don’t need a movie as an excuse to come here. Belly up to the bar and soak in the atmosphere. Beer, dart boards, friendly bartenders … just what the doctor ordered.

S S & W Boardwalk Just a few doors down from the Beachland Ballroom, so the crowd tends to pick up before and after shows, but during non-show times, it’s your standard dive in a rising neighborhood.

Carney’s Top O’ the Flats On the west bank of the Flats, your standard issue bar. Not as grungy as some dives, but it qualifies. No frills, mostly blue collar, cheap drinks, plus a bar dog named Billy. Bonus: a patio in the event you want some fresh air.

Rowley Inn This gem is tucked in the back streets of Tremont, right across from the Christmas Story House. Bar bowling, cheap drinks, quality food, a hearty jukebox.

Mars Bar Dark, cozy in a dive sort of way, with a good selection of drinks and surprisingly delicious gyros.

B and G Tavern B&G doesn’t open until 9:30pm, but that works for its regulars. Cheap eats, cheap drinks, pool tables, and the gentle glow of a Spuds MacKenzie decorating one end of the bar keeps the mood just right.

Ontario Street Café Despite being on busy Ontario Street, directly across from the Jack Cleveland Casino, this bar is easy to miss, but if you want a dive downtown this is your place. Dim lighting, amazingly cheap booze, Genesee beer on tap, tasty sandwiches, a solid R&B/soul-anchored jukebox, and a refreshingly diverse crowd.

Union House Bar & Restaurant This classic spot has something for everyone. Bands, sports on the TV, fish fry, food deals (wings and mussels!), and of course, cheap drinks.
